Sicily: Erice

Erice, oh Erice...we are totally in love with this place! It was definitely a major highlight of the whole trip. We drove from Lo Zingaro and found ourselves driving up a mountaintop towards a medieval fortress set above the valley. Pronounced "Air-i-chey", it has ancient stone walls, gates, and stone streets that lead to 2 castles, a Duomo, and many more medieval churches. This is the view overlooking the sea:



This tower was probably one of my favorite things. "Toretta di Pepoli", the little Pepoli tower below the main castle was tucked right into the rocks and is only accessible from a small dirt path. I could just imagine the stories it could tell! Thank goodness we have Adam once again, he was the one to find the dirt path and lead us to this little piece of charming history.







See how high up we are? On a clear day you can see all the way to Africa. I read that Erice is usually covered in fog, though I find these views so dramatic!






These churches would literally pop out from around the corner. They were tucked in every place possible.

A woman motioned and said with broken English that this doorway was "very Sicilian". It is gorgeous!

I would love to come back to this charming and mysterious city. It was such a fun afternoon exploring and searching out around each corner!
